Every year during the holidays, I try to make a gingerbread house.  I don’t usually get organized before making one and end up rushing to finish it. However, I have discovered ways to make it a bit quicker and easier throughout the years.

I have put together a list of 1o tips for those of you who also like to make them or for those who plan on making one.

1. Give yourself a few days to make the gingerbread house as the dough needs to chill, be baked, then cooled and the icing takes time to dry as well. The process is a lot quicker if you buy a gingerbread house kit, but I love how the house smell when I bake gingerbread from scratch.

2. Have everything you need such as ingredients for the gingerbread, icing and all the candy you plan to use. (Candy left over from Halloween is usually great for variety)

3. Plan out how you would like your house to look and which colors you would like to include so that you have the right candy, snacks or other treats you will need.

4. Use Parchment Paper as a base for the house. I used to use a foil cake board or a foil lined piece or cardboard (usually a flattened cereal box), but the icing would always stick to it and when being eaten, pieces of foil would come off with the candy or icing. Now I use a parchment paper lined cookie sheet as the base. Of course, if you are giving away the gingerbread house, you may want to just use a big cake box lined with parchment paper.

5. Use a Gingerbread House Cookie Cutter Set to make the pieces for the house.

6. Use cups to hold pieces or parts of the house while they are drying.

7. Decorate the pieces of the house and let them dry before sticking them together to form the house.

8. Use really thick royal icing so that it holds and dries faster.

9. Use balls of chocolate, jujube candies or other sturdy candy with a flat base and stick them onto the base, behind gingerbread trees or gingerbread people that may be part of the gingerbread house scene. It will help them stay up better.

10. Be patient and have fun!

  • A definite must to get the house together before the kids are all sat down to decorated and they can’t because the icing hasn’t dried. I love to make the real deal at home to.
