I made these cute cupcakes for my nephew’s first birthday party. It was a “cute as a button” theme. I made both vanilla cupcakes and chocolate cupcakes. I took the easy way out and used instant cake mix, but made the icing from scratch. There was just too much to do, and I can handle eating boxed cake mix, but really prefer homemade icing.

I stuck with a simple buttercream icing consisting of: 4 cups of icing sugar, 1 cup butter, 2 tbsp. of milk all whipped together. I colored half of it pale yellow and the other half turquoise. The adults stuck with the light yellow frosting and the kids went for the turquoise!

Instead of decorating the cupcakes with edible buttons, I made paper cupcake toppers. Feel free to check out the cupcake topper tutorial HERE.

This is a picture of most of the table. I simply placed the cupcakes that wouldn’t fit on the plates randomly on the table since the desserts that were not turquoise or yellow were on a separate table. For instructions on how to make the button cookies also pictured on the table, please check out my post on Button Cookies.

I used Bella Cupcake Couture cupcake wrappers and they matched perfectly! They made everything so much prettier!
