Ideas for Baby Pictures

by Marie on February 17, 2013

There are so many baby picture ideas, but using monthly signs for baby pictures has become quite popular. My sister decided that she would take monthly baby photos for her new baby and asked me to make month signs for her to use. At first, I was using my Cricut to cut out cardstock elephants along with letters and numbers that formed to say “one month”, “2 Months” etc. It got to be quite time consuming.

Then when she moved into her new house, she researched chalk labels to label items in her pantry and came across chalk ink markers.  The markers are amazing in comparison to regular chalk. You don’t have to worry about it rubbing off easily, there’s no dust left all over your fingers or anywhere else. Also, when you write with it there is a lot more precision.  So when she told me about them, I thought instead of making a new elephant for each month, why not make one out of chalkboard paper so that it’s reusable?  Too bad we only came to this conclusion after 8  months!

I used my Cricut to cut out a silhouette of an elephant for my sister using chalkboard paper.  This was my first experience using the cricut to cut something other than card stock and it turned out really well! I had to set the speed to low since the chalkboard contact paper was a lot more delicate than cardstock. As mentioned, the chalkboard paper was pretty thin, so I cut out another elephant out of cardstock so that the adhesive chalk board paper could be adhered to it and make it sturdier. The card stock elephant was the shadow version of the chalkboard one so it looked perfect.

Once she finishes using the elephant for his monthly pictures she’s going to put a magnet on the back of it and use it as a mini message board on her fridge.  There are so many other things that she could also do with it!  For instance, she could hang it on the door to his room and write his name on it, or messages like:  Baby at Play.  She was thinking of even just pinning it to their message board, which could work too!  With something so versatile, she could change its intended use whenever she wants.  As for the chalk ink markers, I’m certain that once her son is old enough, they won’t just be used for labeling any more!

What I used to make the chalkboard elephant:

Self Adhesive Chalkboard Paper

Cardstock

Chalk Ink Markers

Cricut Machine

Cricut New Arrival Cartridge

Instructions:

Using a Cricut along with the New Arrival Cartridge, cut out the chalk elephant using the “blackout” feature. Set the speed to low. I made my elephant 7″ in size. You can make it any size you would like though. :)

Next, using the “shadow” feature and leaving the size setting the same, cut out a cardstock elephant using any pattern or coloured card stock you prefer. Also, feel free to change the speed of the blade to medium if you’d like.

Next, carefully peel the chalk paper from the backing and center it onto the card stock elephant.

Decorate as you wish using the Chalk Ink Markers.

Have fun! I would love to see any creations you come up with. Feel free to share any ideas or other tips in the comments section!
