A recipe for playdough is a recipe for fun…….and sometimes a big mess, but it is well worth it! My kids love to play with playdough, but they sometimes leave it out to dry. Usually in little bits that end up all over the floor. Needless to say, they ask and ask for new play dough all the time!

I used to buy the brand name version of the stuff and it would entertain my kids for hours at a time, but I personally don’t like the smell of it too much and if you want it in a huge assortment of colors, it can get pricey.  So, I decided to try making some homemade play dough!

My daughter’s Kindergarten teacher gave everyone a really easy recipe on how to make playdough and also requested that each child bring in a batch of play dough once during the school year. I’ll admit that I didn’t have time to make homemade play dough at that time, so I simply purchased some for the class. More than six months later, I was finally ready to give it a go! I’m so glad I did, because it was fun to make and easier than I thought it would be too!

To make this fairly easy playdough recipe, gather together the following ingredients:

1 cup flour

1 cup water

2 tsp. cream of tartar

1/2 cup salt

2 tbsp. cooking oil

food coloring

In a pot, stir together the flour, salt and cream of tartar.

Add the cooking oil.

Put a few drops of food coloring into the cup of water and stir it up.

Pour the colored water into the pot and mix over medium heat.

Keep stirring the mixture until it forms a pliable ball.

Let the dough cool for a bit, then knead it into a ball. I made the playdough 3 times and colored them as primary colors. Then I cut them into thirds and mixed them together to create the secondary colors.

I was able to create this colorful rainbow and my kids had many different colors to make shapes of all sorts with!

Each batch of playdough yielded about 3 to 4 regular size containers of the brand name version of this stuff, so it should last quite a while if you make as many batches as I did!

I just love all the vibrant colors you made. I usually just make one color at a time, but your rainbow looks too fun. Vicky from http://www.messforless.net

  • We go through so much Play-Doh. It’s one of my twins’ favorite things to play with. When we’re done potty training (will we ever be done?), I’ll definitely be making these.

I know what you mean. That’s why I decided to make it so that I’m not buying it all the time! Lol. Yes, potty training is quite time consuming, but it will be over before you know it and then you`ll have more time for other things. 🙂
